Among the approximate 40 folks attending the Vets Fishing Party May 24 at Tuck-Away-Resort southeast of Backus included 18 vets from Eagles Healing Nest at Sauk Centre, seven volunteers from the resort and its neighbors and friends and a dozen members of the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion. The resort and its friends provided boats, motors, gas, bait and guides. The Legion contingent provided minnows for additional bait, brats, burgers, potato salad, lemonade and dessert cupcakes for a post-fishing picnic, as well as chocolate cookies for the vets to take home. Fish were caught, food was eaten, the socializing was terrific – a good time was had by all!
Eagles Healing Nest provides services to post-service veterans with physical and emotional issues. Resort owner Todd Malecha, a disabled vet, came up with the idea for the annual event and asked the Backus American Legion to help organize it.
